The Smithsonian is a trust instrumentality of the United States and, as such, is in a unique position as it relates to its legal obligations. Although it is not subject to many of the laws that govern information privacy for Executive Branch agencies, the Smithsonian applies information privacy best practices to support its mission "to increase and diffuse knowledge" and adopts Generally Accepted Privacy Principles ("GAPP") as the foundation for its privacy policies and procedures. |
